This illustrated and prepaid Soviet envelope of 4. October 1971, bears the dual name postmarks of Lugansk and Voroshilovgrad, the home of the famous railway works, whose locomotives were exported to the GDR in large numbers and also Bulgaria. Lugansk was renamed Voroshilovgrad after Kliment Voroshilov in 1935 after the Commissar and later Marshal who did much of Stalin’s dirty work.

The town’s name reverted to Lugansk between 1958 and 1970 when personality cults were curtailed, and it finally reverted to Lugansk in 1990. This envelope is unusual in that the then former name LUGANSK has also been applied (it is a souvenir) alongside that of Voroshilovgrad.
The factory -literally the Luhansk Diesel Engine Factory "October Revolution" – dates from 1896, as evidenced by the 75th anniversary motif, It was founded by Gustav Hartmann , the son of the founder of the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz,and its locomotives were put to use throughout Tsarist Russia, connecting up the towns of the vast empire. In 1918 it was renamed after the previous year’s Revolution. 12000 steam locos were made here until 1956 when production switched over to diesel engines. The famous class 120 (V200) and 130 of Deutsche Reichsbahn were produced here (the latter is illustrated, the so-called Ludmilla) until 1982. This class of Locomotive known in the USSR as ТЭ109 was planned in 1967 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the revolution.

The factory continues as the state owned Luhanskgteplovod. These distinctive and distinctive sounding locos may still be seen in the united Germany and Poland as Class 232 in a variety of liveries. Originally, outside the Soviet Union,there were 873 of the several variants of the original class 130 in the DDR, 90 in Bulgaria, and 2 in Czechoslovakia.

The legacy of the Hartmanns who founded the Lugansk operation, which recently supplied locomotives to Iraq, carried on during GDR times as the VEB Spinnereimaschinenbau in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) and the last steam locomotives of the engine works there, a victim of the 1920s depression, are still running on the narrow gauge railways of Saxony. Gustav Hartmann’s villa ,his father’s summer residence, still stands in Dresden Laubegast, (Laubegaster Ufer 33) though his father’s statue has vanished from Chemnitz where he lived and died close to the factory (Kaßbergstraße)
